Remember 5-10 years ago when you were a teenager, full of so much teenage angst and rage that you didn't know what to do with it all? What an emotional time.
For generation y, it was a great time period to mash our sorrows and music together to feel a certain type of way. We were lucky enough to live as teens in a time when every punk rock/emo band knew exactly how we were feeling. We filled our AIM profiles with their lyrics which matched our lives perfectly. Knowing that these bands knew how we feel made us feel not so alone in our tragic, teenage minds. I credit these songs for holding my hand through my teenage years. How can such tragic songs make you feel better? That one is kinda hard to say. All I know is, sitting in my room, blasting these songs and singing my heart out gave me assurance that it would all get better someday. This is for the ones who were blessed to be in high school during the 2000's. We will never forget these songs that were the anthem of our lives and still to this day touch our heart. We will always remember these lyrics for the hard times in our lives. I dedicate this to you, gen y. 1. Adam's Song - Blink-182 (2000) Granted, I was only 8 when this song was released, but I count it. Really, anything by Blink 182 because they were and still are the shit. AIM Profile Lyric: "I couldn't wait til I got home, to pass the time in my room alone." 2. Hands Down - Dashboard Confessional (2003) "Hands Down" was a little before the teen years, but cut it close. What a beautiful yet tragic song. Every lyric. AIM Profile Lyric: "My hopes are so high, that your kiss might kill me." 3. All That I've Got - The Used (2004) The Used graced us with several songs from In Love and Death that we could connect with and I can say this is the first album that truly came into my teen years. AIM Profile Lyric: "I'll be just fine, pretending I'm not." 4. Ohio is for Lovers - Hawthorne Heights (2004) This entire album was played on repeat going into 7th grade. They quickly became a band I loved and bought their next album when it was released. AIM Profile Lyric: "I can''t make it on my own, because my heart is in Ohio." 5. Apologize - One Republic (2005) Not so much the same feel or genre of the other songs, but a song that spoke to many. AIM Profile Lyric: "I need you like a heart needs a beat, but that's nothin new." 6. Helena - My Chemical Romance (2005) MCR made our heart cry with Gerard's beautiful voice and lyrics. AIM Profile Lyric: "So long and goodnight." 7. Sugar, We're Goin' Down - Fall Out Boy (2005) An extremely popular song, sung by many, and made everyone who didn't know FOB already fall in love with them. AIM Profile Lyric: "I'm just a notch in your bedpost, but you're just a line in a song." 8. Scars - Papa Roach (2005) A song to follow "Last Resort," which almost matched how great of a song that still is AIM Profile Lyric: "And my scars remind me, that the past is real." 9. Swing Life Away - Rise Against (2005) How can you not relate to half of the lyrics in this song? AIM Profile Lyric: "I won't cross these streets until you hold my hand." 10. Smile in your Sleep - Silverstein (2005) Although I didn't understand half the lyrics until I looked them up, a good song none-the-less. AIM Profile Lyric: "And all the times you promised me that everything would work out in the end, you were gravely mistaken." 11. Running From Lions - All Time Low (2005) I fell in love with All Time Low with their song off The Party Scene. They will never top that album, sorry. AIM Profile Lyric: "Get me out of this place, before I cause more damage." 12. The Space Between - Valencia (2006) A band I was introduced to by some old friends, which provided me with some good lyrics to remember. AIM Profile Lyric: "It's amazing how a girl like you, could affect a guy like me." 13. Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off - Panic! at the Disco (2006) Panic! just loved writing long ass song titles that you could barely get in with one breath. Also, songs about hot hot sex. This album is gold. AIM Profile Lyric: "Let's get these teen hearts beating faster...Will you dance to this beat and hold a lover close?" 14. Three Cheers for Five Years - Mayday Parade (2006) What can I say about Mayday Parade? Many songs and lyrics to touch your heart. Amazing. AIM Profile Lyric: "Another night, another dream wasted on you." 15. Lips of an Angel - Hinder (2006) I can't believe this song is this old. Another song where the lyrics are good, but did they quite match our lives? AIM Profile Lyric: "But girl you make it hard to be faithful, with the lips of an angel." 16. Face Down - The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (2006) Everyone knew this song, they should have known the whole album. Your Guardian Angel is another not to soon forget. AIM Profile Lyric: "She said, 'This doesn't hurt.'" 17. MakeDamnSure - Taking Back Sunday (2006) TBS gave me a lot of songs from before high school; Cute without the E, You're So Last Summer. This song was a sing-a-long for me and my friends. AIM Profile Lyric: "I'm gonna make damn sure, that you can't ever leave." 18. The Kill - 30 Seconds to Mars (2006) Still love 30 Seconds, that voice, that face. AIM Profile Lyric: "Come break me down, bury me, bury me." 19. All Over You - The Spill Canvas (2007) Just a good, relatable song. AIM Profile Lyric: "I'm all over you, I'm not over you." 21. AIM Profile Lyric: "Dear God, the only thing I ask of you, is to hold her when I'm not around." 22. If It Means A Lot To You - A Day to Remember (2009) A song for my senior year that would still touch me to this day. AIM Profile Lyric: "I just feel complete when you're by my side."
